Grief Support Groups - Are those Helpful?

American National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255

Grief support groups are very useful when you have suffered a loss and are grieving. Please accept my condolences for that which caused your grief. You might be feeling as if you are all alone in a tunnel of grief with no one able to understand your state of mind. If you wish to experience all stages of your grief by yourself, I guess you are free to do so. However it is a very lonely path.

It would be very useful...

...to have someone who will listen to you in your grief. Not every one has that kind of support. If you were lonely to begin with or if you built no social connections other than your main intimate connection, you are faced with grief and loneliness.

I cannot...

...provide the personal support but I can tell you where to find grief support and grief support groups. This website also provides many resources to overcome loneliness – just search for the kind of loneliness support you need in the search box at the bottom of this page. I have provided resources on this page for grief support.

You may find this...

...a little difficult to believe at this time but you are one of the best resources you can draw on. The first thing to do is to get knowledgeable about grief and its stages. A good resource for that is the Grief Website . That website will inform you about the five stages of grief and provide other useful information about it.

The next step is...

...to find grief support groups. Before I point out some support groups let me tell you how to find support groups yourself. Search for the support group that is right for you. Form the search term as 'your loss + support groups', type the search term into the Google search bar and click on Search or press the enter key. Then scan the search results to find the group that can support you.

If you have...

...suffered loss of a spouse, search for 'loss of spouse support groups'. Then scan the search results for one that will tell you about such a support group.

If you do the above you will find griefnet.org/support/sg2.html . Within that website you will see that there are several different types of such support groups you can join.

When you search in Google for Widows support groups, you see the dailystrength.org/c/Widows-Widowers/support-group and the Young Widow website.

As another example, search for 'child loss support groups' and you will find compassionatefriends.org/home.aspx .

I have...

...presented the resources in this manner because your loss and grief is personal to you. You are in the best position to find the proper grief support group for yourself. Please perform your searches as I have illustrated above and you will be able to find the right resources.

Remember,

you need to find the support.
